Often the turning of the seasons along with the monthly cycle of the Moon have a massive impact on pagan ceremonies. The Moon was witnessed symbolic for the Goddess and ceremonies of adoration in addition to magic took place in the light from the Moon. Wiccans however celebrate the Full Moon and the changes of seasons. The exact Wiccan calender has 13 Full Moon celebrations plus 8 Sabbats. Sabbats are major events in the Wiccan world and are represented as the days of power.
4 of them Sabbats are Solstices and Equinoxes which are the beginnings in the astronomical seasons. The other 4 are based on old folk fairs but are still regarded as important in the Wiccan year. The very 8 Sabbats keep order and structure to the 12 months, reminding us of the life cycle which will remain much longer we have gone.
Probably associated with agriculture and the life supporting cycles of animals, the 4 Sabbats which have been detected for the longest time are:
Imbolc – February twenty second
Beltane – April 30th
Lughnasadh – August to begin with
Samhain – October 31st
After careful observation on the astronomical year, Solstices and Equinoxes were brought in to be able to Wiccan structure. The dates vary from year to season but are around the 21st of March, June, September and even December.
Many Wiccan traditions survived for example:
The congé sabbatique have also been ended up saving by the Catholic Church and have been Christianized. Traces of the Pagan way are found in Christianity, for example , Easter is positioned in the Sunday after the 1st Full Moon after the spring equinox.
The Sabbats are solar rituals which make up 50 % the Wiccan year with the yearly cycle of the Sunshine. The Esbats are the Wiccan Full Moon celebrations. One can find 12 or 13 Full Moons every year, 1 any 28 1/4 days. The Moon is not only a symbol of the exact Goddess but a source of energy and Wiccans believe the particular is greater at this time making the Esbat an ideal time to perform magick.
Unfortunately, Christianity have taken over some of the great Questionnable sacred traditions and festivals and left them treats like a money making claim. Samhain replaced by candy together with hideous costumes. Yule was replaced by a Christian start but even that pails into insignificance to what we have now know as $ ka-ching $ ka-ching $.
Wiccans still celebrate these great sacred nights and the good old magick remains.
Yule – December 21st
The Empress gives birth to son at Yule. The Winter Solstice is recognized for births of great importance including Mithras. The main Christians also adopted this time of year for their use in 273 H. E. Yule has the shortest day of the year as well as being a time of the greatest darkness. Since the God is the Direct sun light, this is when the Sun is reborn. Wiccans light candles for you to welcome the Suns return. Meanwhile the Goddess is placed after her delivery. Yule was celebrated for the gain of spring who was just around the corner, ready to supply food one more time.
