Looking for seen it before. A sagging gutter barely making ends meet the fascia board, peeling or blistering paint about the fascia or perhaps sections of the fascia board or soffit directly under the gutter have fallen completely off the property.
Our office receives several calls a week about solid wood and trim rot. Specifically, the wood or materials located directly below the shingles on the eave of the house, is often holding the gutter. Also, behind the fascia deck is the soffit, which is installed perpendicular to the soffit and fascias .
Mending the fascia and or soffit is one thing. But we need to also identify why it rotted in the first place. Simply updating the rotted material is not enough.
More often than not, the problem is with the shingles. Usually the shingles were not installed accurately. Actually, the shingles did extend past the fascia enter 1″-11/4″. The term for this problem is “short-laid” shingles. Since rainfall subscribes to the principal of surface tension, a short period of “short-laid” shingles along the eave can easily rot the very fascia directly below in short order. Instead of falling directly away from the edge of the shingle, the rain water will roll again toward the board before gravity makes it fall. Dependant upon how short the shingles are laid, will determine how badly the fascia and soffit will rot.
Following your rotted material has been removed, replaced, primed and coated, the source of the problem must be dealt with. Left unchecked, the problem can occur once again.
The “short-laid” shingles can be removed. New shingles can be installed at the eave in a way which they will stretch farther past the fascia board allowing the rain water for you to fall harmlessly into the gutter directly below.
Another, more affordable means of repair is to install a metal drip edge. Build edge comes in 10′ lengths. It is shaped like the correspondence “L”. The top portion of the drip edge is placed within the shingles and the bottom flange of the drip edge masks the back wall of the gutter or the fascia board (if there is no gutter). With a gutter on the fascia board, the main newly installed drip edge prevents the rain water via going behind the gutter and it also prevents the warping process from starting once again.
